Mishawaka’s John Young Middle School (JYMS) has been sending students to National History Day (NHD) in College Park, Maryland for more than a decade.  This year, five JYMS students qualified for the national competition, and for the first time, a Mishawaka High School (MHS) student also qualified for nationals.  In addition, for the second year in a row, a documentary, from a team of four JYMS students,  has been selected to be played at the National Museum of African American History & Culture at the Smithsonian.  The documentary, Breaking The Barriers at Bat: The Indianapolis Clowns is one of only 31 documentaries chosen for the Showcase.

A written entry from a Junior at Mishawaka High School is also being recognized at National History Day, as well as another junior individual documentary.  Unfortunately, this year’s week-long celebration is virtual this year due to the coronavirus, however, many of the events will be live or posted on the site for the week-long celebration that began today.

At Indiana’s State Contest held virtually in April, The Junior Group Documentary on the Indianapolis Clowns and Joaquin DeVries´ senior paper on the Harlem Hellfighters both placed 2nd in their categories, and Mike Belting´s Junior Individual Documentary took 1st place in his category.
