MHS Schedule Beginning April 12, 2021

  • REMINDER FOR JYMS AND MHS STUDENTS AND FAMILIES:

    Beginning April 12, 2021, John Young Middle School and Mishawaka High School will be back to 5 days a week of in-person instruction. Those students that selected live virtual learning will remain as live virtual students.

    Mishawaka High School Information

    The 2020-2021 school year has been unlike any we’ve ever experienced! We know this year has been challenging for everyone, but we are excited to move into the next phase of the SCM Reopening Plan. Beginning Thursday, February 25, we will welcome all in-person students to learning 4 days per week - Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. Wednesdays will be a Virtual Learning Live day for all students. Beginning on April 12, all in-person students will be attending classes 5 days a week. Students who started the semester 100% Virtual may remain virtual at this time. If you would like to switch your student(s) from 100% virtual learning to in-person, please contact your grade-level administrator by February 22 to request a change in learning method.

    Expectations for In-Person Students
    Doors open at 7:15 for breakfast which is served until 7:45; 1st block starts at 8:00. Students are dismissed from school at 2:30 unless they are scheduled to attend RTI with a teacher, which may last until 3:10.

    • Students attending in-person should attend classes in-person on a regular basis. 
      • It is only permissible to miss in-person learning if your student is sick or has an appointment. Students should not fluctuate between in-person and virtual learning unless it is for an excused absence reason.
      • Please follow normal procedures for calling your student in when they must miss school. The phone number to the MHS Attendance Line is (574) 254-7309. Doctor’s notes may be faxed to (574) 254-7455.
    • Students should report to school on time wearing their school ID and a face mask that covers the mouth and nose.
      • Face masks must be worn at all times unless actively eating or drinking.
      • Moving forward, neck gaiters or bandanas will no longer be considered an adequate face mask. 
    • Students should follow all expectations for a 100% virtual student on Wednesdays while attending classes live at home.

    Expectations for Virtual Live Students
    Learning as we move into the next phase will be similar to what students have experienced in the past. Students will be expected to virtually attend class every block, every day. There will no longer be ENTIRELY self-paced classes however some classes may include portions of the instruction that are self-directed. 

    • Students should arrive to live learning sessions on time and remain there throughout the instruction time. Their teacher may dismiss them from Meets during work time while he/she works with in-person students. They must be present virtually to be marked present. 
      • Teachers may require your student to check back in at the end of the block. Failure to do so could result in the student being marked absent for the entire class period.
    • The expectation is that the student’s camera is on during class time when live instruction is being provided and that students are dressed appropriately for school.
    • Students should virtually attend Advisory every day.
    • Students should complete independent work, submit assignments, and complete assessments on specified due dates.
      • Grades and credit are awarded in the same way as an in-person course/class.
    • Students should utilize the Canvas Learning Management System to facilitate all communication, instruction, assignments, and assessments.
    • Students must check their email/Canvas inbox daily!
    • Students should be  available during the RTI block daily. Remember that classes may end at 2:30 but the school day does not end until 3:10. If a teacher schedules a student for RTI time at the end of the day, they are required to attend. 
      • This is also a great time to complete work or request additional help if needed.

    Teacher Office Hours and Availability:

    • Teachers will be available to students during the daily Office Hours (7:40 am-8:00 am and 2:30 pm-3:20 pm).
    • Teachers will respond  to student/parent emails or phone calls in a timely manner.
    • Teachers are available throughout the week from 2:30 am-3:10 am to provide additional help to your student. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to teachers to request RTI time.

    Sick and COVID:
    All students and staff are expected to conduct at-home, self-screening/monitoring for COVID-19 related symptoms prior to leaving their residence on a daily basis. Any student who is experiencing symptoms common with COVID-19 should not report to school, rather parents should notify the PSO office at (574) 254-7309. Additionally, we ask that parents/guardians notify us any time their student tests positive for COVID-19, regardless if s/he is attending in-person or 100% virtually.

    Food Service:
    The SCM Food Service Department will continue to serve meals for our virtual students daily at John Young Middle School between the hours of 11:00 am and 12:15 pm. Mishawaka High School will remain the same, serving multiple meals on Monday and Thursday evenings between the hours of 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm for those students who are unable to take advantage of the daily pickup at JYMS. All students attending in person are eligible to receive free breakfast and lunch.

    WI-FI Access:
    School City of Mishawaka will sponsor twelve months of internet access to families that receive free or reduced lunch through the national school lunch program at no cost to the family. Remember, families must review their free or reduced paperwork each academic year. Families can check for eligibility at www.internetessentials.com and then contact their academic dean to request a promo code to begin the sponsored service.

    If you need technology support, you can call 254-7795 between the hours of 8-3.  

    Students and Families Who Are Struggling:
    Any family or student who is in need of social-emotional support, please reach out to your school principal, assistant principal, dean or guidance counselor. All secondary staff will continue to report to their buildings during this time period and will be available during the school day to assist with problems.
